Need a break?
Looking after someone can be rewarding, but it’s also important to take time for yourself. Here are a few ways we can help you enjoy a well-earned break:
Beach hut breaks
We have four beach huts across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch that carers can book for just £5 a day. Each hut is stocked with essentials like chairs, crockery and a kettle. Some are accessible, and all are close to the sea—perfect for a peaceful day out.
Holiday lodge breaks
Our holiday lodges in Devon and Weymouth offer a relaxing break for carers and their families. They’re available for a small fee and include accessible features. You can apply for one break every other year, and we’ll help with the form if needed.
Carers social events
We run regular events just for carers—like afternoon teas, coach trips, pottery painting and more. It’s a great way to meet others, try something new, and enjoy time for yourself. You’ll find event details in our newsletter.
Other organisations also organise events for carers.
Respite
Taking a short break gives you time to rest, knowing the person you support is safe and well looked after.
Sometimes, you can arrange a short break (respite) through Adult Social Care after a conversation about your needs as a carer, or the needs of the person you support. This is called a carer’s assessment or an assessment for the person you care for.
Depending on your situation, there may be a financial assessment to see if you need to contribute towards the cost of your break. Some people receive support free of charge, while others may be asked to pay a contribution that is fair and based on what they can afford.
